How does VR technology apply to intelligent transportation

As a product of information, industrialization, and intelligent fusion, an “intelligent transportation system” brings the value of diversity, smart travel platform for the precise location of the driver and passenger technology make intelligent platform itself the national traffic service provider and millions of passengers are benefited from it. Creating intelligent transportation requires the support of various innovative technologies. So, what are the exciting applications of VR technology in intelligent transportation?

1. VR technology is used to test traffic solutions

The UK’s transport system has unveiled a new “visualization lab” to help solve traffic problems with the help of VR to save money on related tests.

The lab is called the visualization lab because it consists of a large omnidirectional treadmill about 20 feet in diameter. Kaedup transport hopes to rely on this set of VR systems to bring innovative and practical solutions to the current problems of the UK transport system.

2. Application of VR technology in traffic safety publicity and education

Traffic safety publicity and education are of great significance at present, but the current traffic safety education is poor, the main reason is the lack of effective education methods, means, and platforms.

3. VR technology is used in rail transit simulation system

Rail transit is the use of 3D virtual simulation and simulation technology to simulate the orbit design and manufacture of the vehicle to running maintenance of each stage and each link such as 3D environment, users in the environment can “make” commitment to track traffic, so as to expand practitioners means of cognition and cognitive domain.

Here, the main application fields of VR technology include three parts:

First, virtual design. The virtual design includes rail design, rail transit vehicle design, and rail transit environment design. Virtual reality technology does not directly participate in the design of rail transit, but as an efficient assistant tool for designers,  and it helps designers save design time and improve the quality of design products.

Second, virtual assembly. In order to ensure that the design of rail transit vehicle conforms to the requirements of fluid mechanics, engineering mechanics, and other disciplines, the virtual assembly of each part is realized by using computer technology, and the chimerism and compatibility between each part can be checked conveniently. In addition, the virtual assembly can be further developed into an interactive 3d virtual training environment, to enable trainees to familiarize themselves with various components and assembly processes in an immersive environment, so as to improve their equipment assembly ability.

Third, virtual operation. Before the train is put into use, the 3Dvirtual simulation technology is used to simulate the train running state, the changes of each part and the surrounding environment, so as to check the train running feasibility. The computer can also be used to modify part of the data to observe the impact of train movement due to data changes, so as to summarize more train operation experience, effectively avoid the risks after the formal use of the train, and improve the ability of relevant staff to deal with emergencies.

4. Application of VR technology in driving training

On October 9, 2016, a new application of VR technology — VR virtual driving technology — appeared at the world simulation technology application exhibition.

The technology is currently used in the field of driving training. On the application of VR driving simulator, it is not only to implement the standardization of driving training, but also to ensure the driving training level, and developed a simulation road driving by simulating the actual road conditions.

5. VR technology is applied to station navigation

Aiming at the situation that some passengers are not familiar with the structure inside the railway station, the Nanchang railway bureau launched VR (virtual) panoramic navigation at Nanchang west railway station, Fuzhou railway station, Xiamen railway station, and other key stations under the tube during the 2017 Spring Festival transportation. Hubei Hankou and Wuhan railway stations are also provided with 360-degree panoramic navigation function in VR stations for the first time.

A 60-inch VR screen is set up in the waiting hall of the Hankou railway station. Through the VR screen, passengers can more directly to the ticket office, entrance, waiting hall, lost and found the office, key waiting room, and other places, and take fewer “detour” when entering the station.

6. Application of VR technology in road and bridge

Virtual reality technology has also been applied in highway and bridge construction.

Because roads and Bridges need to handle a lot of 3D models and texture data at the same time, which requires high-performance computer support as the background, but with the improvement of computer hardware and software technology in recent years, some of the original technical bottlenecks resolved that the application of virtual reality reached unprecedented development.

In addition, VR technology will also be used in the gaming industry, and VR simulators in indoor playgrounds are also very popular.
